Google Pixel Fold 2 Rumored to Launch Alongside Pixel 9 Series

Google made waves in May last year with the launch of the Google Pixel Fold, marking its entry into the foldable smartphone arena. Now, reports suggest that a successor to the original Pixel Fold, dubbed the Pixel Fold 2, is in the pipeline. The Pixel Fold 2 is expected to feature Google’s in-house Tensor G4 SoC, codenamed “zumapro,” a step up from the Tensor G2 found in its predecessor. Interestingly, the upcoming Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro models, slated for release in October, are also rumored to be powered by the same chipset.

According to Android Authority, Google is currently testing the Tensor G4 chip in the Pixel Fold 2, deviating from earlier plans to utilize the Tensor G3. Initial prototypes of the foldable reportedly housed the Tensor G3 chipset, codenamed “zuma.” The Tensor G4 is also expected to drive the performance of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro.

Should these processor leaks prove accurate, the Pixel Fold 2 could debut alongside the Pixel 9 series in October, deviating from its predecessor’s May launch timeline.

The current prototypes of the Pixel Fold 2 reportedly boast 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, a significant upgrade from the previous model’s 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. This enhanced onboard memory may accommodate numerous on-device AI features as part of Pixie.

The Google Pixel Fold made its debut at the Google I/O 2023 event last year, with a starting price of $1,799 (approximately Rs. 1,47,500) for the base variant with 256GB storage.

In terms of specifications, the Google Pixel Fold features a 7.6-inch inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 5.8-inch full-HD+ OLED outer display. It is powered by Google’s Tensor G2 SoC, complemented by a Titan M2 security chip and 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The device boasts a triple rear camera setup, including a 48-megapixel primary wide-angle lens, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 10.8-megapixel dual PD telephoto lens. For selfies, there’s a 9.5-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel inner selfie camera. The Pixel Fold houses a 4,821mAh battery with support for 30W charging and wireless charging.
