YouTube Testing Color-Based Video Feeds Feature for Mobile App

YouTube is reportedly experimenting with a novel feature for its mobile app, offering users the option to select from three colors—red, green, and blue—and then generating a separate video feed where all suggested videos follow the chosen color theme. While several users have reported encountering this new option, it appears that the feature has not yet been rolled out widely. According to reports, the suggested videos in this color-themed feed do not share any commonalities apart from the predominant color in their thumbnails.

As per a report by 9to5Google, the new feature was first observed on the YouTube mobile app. A screenshot shared in the report depicts a card displayed on the home screen with the message “Craving something new?” The card presents three color options—red, green, and blue—accompanied by the text “Create a feed of videos based off color, and enjoy exploring.” Users on both Android and iOS platforms have reported encountering this card within the YouTube app.

Once a user selects a color, a dedicated video feed is generated where all recommended videos adhere to the specified color scheme. This additional feed does not replace the main home feed but appears as an extra option in the list of choices visible at the top of the home page.

It’s important to note a couple of key points. Firstly, the recommended videos in the color-themed feed are diverse and do not share any thematic connections aside from their predominant color theme. They may originate from subscribed channels or unrelated sources, and their selection may not be influenced by the user’s viewing history. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the color selection is solely based on thumbnail analysis or if the algorithm evaluates the entire video to determine its predominant color.

The concept of color-based recommendations on YouTube raises some intriguing questions, as most users typically prefer thematic connections to content rather than color themes. However, this feature might appeal to users who appreciate a more aesthetic browsing experience on the app.

Some users on the social media platform Lemmy have speculated that this feature could serve as a means for YouTube to gather data, as colors play a significant role in advertising and marketing strategies. Certain color schemes are known to attract more engagement for content. Nevertheless, it’s possible that this feature is simply an experimental and quirky addition to the platform.
