Apple’s Transition to microLED for Apple Watch Series Delayed

The much-anticipated shift to microLED display technology for Apple Watch series might not materialize as soon as previously speculated. A recent report from a Korean publication indicates that the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display is unlikely to occur before 2027, contrary to earlier projections pointing to a 2025 release. The delay is attributed to supply chain challenges faced by the Cupertino-based company. Interestingly, Apple introduced the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 alongside the iPhone 15 lineup in September last year.

The Elec, in its report, reveals that the launch timeline for an Apple Watch featuring a microLED display has been pushed beyond 2026, with even a 2027 release date deemed uncertain according to analysts’ assessments. Apple is purportedly encountering difficulties in finalizing the component supply chain necessary for the production of microLED displays tailored for the Apple Watch. This development contradicts previous indications of a potential 2025 release date. Trend Force had earlier suggested a delay until 2026, while Ross Young of DSCC speculated that 2025 could witness the advent of microLED technology on the Apple Watch.

The primary hurdle contributing to the supply issues is the high manufacturing costs associated with microLED. According to the report, the production cost of a 2-inch microLED display stands at $150 (approximately Rs. 12,000), nearly four times higher than the $38 (roughly Rs. 3,000) cost for an OLED panel. Integrating microLED technology into a wearable priced at $799 poses a significant challenge for Apple, potentially impacting the company’s revenue from the product.

Presently, Apple utilizes OLED displays for its wearable devices. However, microLED display technology offers notable enhancements in resolution, lifespan, color contrast, and visibility at varying angles compared to conventional panels. Speculations abound that Apple might adopt microLED technology across its iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineups starting from 2024 onwards, replacing the current OLED standard.

Meanwhile, the recently unveiled Apple Watch Ultra 2, alongside the iPhone 15 lineup and Watch Series 9 last year, is already available in India, priced at Rs. 89,900. The device offers various band options including Alpine Loop, Trail Loop, and Ocean.
