YouTube Plans Native App for Apple Vision Pro Amidst Earlier App Rejection

YouTube is set to develop a native app for the Apple Vision Pro, marking a shift from its earlier stance of not allowing its iPad app to run on Apple’s first ‘spatial computer’. This move follows reports from a month ago suggesting that YouTube, along with Spotify and Netflix, would not support their apps on the Vision Pro. Despite the lack of a specific timeline, YouTube has confirmed its intention to introduce a native app for visionOS, the operating system of the Apple Vision Pro.

Currently, owners of the pricey Vision Pro headset can stream YouTube videos through Safari or third-party apps. The decision to develop a dedicated YouTube app for the Vision Pro comes shortly after the launch of a third-party app named Juno last week. Priced at $5 (approximately Rs. 410), Juno, created by Apollo for Reddit developer Christian Selig, offers an unofficial YouTube client experience, complete with ad-free viewing for YouTube Premium subscribers.

While YouTube has not explicitly stated whether Juno’s popularity influenced its decision, the impending launch of an official visionOS application promises an enhanced viewing experience for Vision Pro users. Juno already allows viewers to utilize gestures for video resizing, dimming the surrounding area, and controlling playback settings such as speed and captions.

Presently, the Apple Vision Pro boasts access to over 600 apps spanning various categories, including streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, ESPN, and Apple TV+. Disney+ subscribers in the US can even enjoy 3D movies on the headset, with access to the platform’s extensive content library set to expand further on the Vision Pro, according to Disney’s statements.
